I’m Mike Wunsch and I’m running for Oregon Village Board.

I’ve lived in the village for twenty years with my wife. Our sons grew up here and went to Oregon schools. I coached soccer and my wife volunteered in the schools. I enjoy living here and care about our community.

Issues that are important to me include: making Oregon a more affordable place to live, lowering taxes, implementing sustainable practices, providing a more open and inclusive government, strengthening our downtown, and advancing public transportation for those who need it.

I was elected to the village board in 2021. I worked with people from all walks of life and served on committees including Public Works, Finance and Personnel, Sustainability, and the Council on Aging. I took the job seriously and came to meetings prepared with questions and comments so that I could make informed decisions on behalf of constituents.

If re-elected, I will do the same.

However, this time I believe we have some serious economic issues to address. As someone who ran a successful business for years, I feel strongly that the board needs to spend tax dollars more wisely.

The board has approved a 4-year Capital Improvement Plan that will cost $7,282 for every man, woman and child living in Oregon. Village debt will increase by half. Sewer and water bills will more than double.

Most of us live in Oregon because we like living in a small town. But our village board has committed to rapidly growing the village. It’s given developers millions of taxpayer dollars even though Oregon is already one of the fastest growing communities in the state. Fully 1/8 of village tax revenue now goes directly from your wallet into the pockets of developers. And that amount is growing.

Last year the board sold the million-dollar 249/267 North Main Street property to a developer for a dollar.

Taxes are going through the roof. The Wheel and Street light taxes should be repealed. There should be no new taxes without going to referendum and letting residents decide!

The board has become out of touch with citizens. One-half of the village board appointed the other half rather than letting voters elect their government officials. The board keeps appointing a selective group of people to committees. We need a village government that represents ALL citizens, not just the ‘connected’ few.

I believe Oregon is a great town with a bright future. But I think we have to get our fiscal and democratic house in order.

Let’s repeal the Wheel and Streetlight taxes and have voters decide whether to raise taxes. Let’s make government more open and responsive.

I’d be honored to have your vote.
